ALEXANDER DEMETRIOU
b. 1989
Alexander Demetriou makes monumental ceramic sculpture driven by scale, weight, and irreversibility.
He studied at Parsons The New School for Design in New York City and the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia. In 2021, Demetriou built an 11,000-square-foot studio in Cleveland, OH dedicated to the production of large-scale work.
Working in clay at industrial scale and completing each piece through wood firing—rarely pursued at this size—Demetriou operates within a narrow and demanding field of contemporary practice. Fire, gravity, and material failure are treated not as risks to be eliminated, but as structural conditions of the work itself.
Demetriou is a dedicated husband and father of four. Family, responsibility, and continuity form the quiet center of his practice.
